Sunday the 10th of August I completed my first duathlon at Springfield, as this was my first one I decided on the sprint distance, 5k run/20k bike/ 2.5k run.
Heading out to the race in the dark as usual but this time I was not dreading the start as there was no swim involved so no cold water. I felt a little uneasy and did not know what to expect only running and riding. I had packed my bag the night before and being the triathlete that I am I slipped in a pair of goggles and some of the other things I not normal take to the race such as my transition towel. We got to the transitions area and I grabbed my race pack, put all the stickers on and headed into transition. I racked my bike then started my usual transition routine of clipping in my bike shoes and putting my running shoes neatly to the side of my bike's front wheel.
Luckily I quickly realised that I would need my running shoes on to start the race, duathlon rookie. I was now ready to grab a coffee and prepare to take off my jacket and feel how cold it was. It was freezing and even a hot coffee could not warm me up.
I lined up at the race start and was ready to run, it felt a little strange to be in a tri suit ready to run, I started out quite fast and wasn't sure if if had gone to hard or not but I kept pushing this pace and completed my first 5 in 23:03, very happy with this time it was now on to the bike and ready to test out my new bike fit and saddle and the set of TLR wheels on loan to me for this race and the upcoming world championships.
The bike course offered a hill straight up then another and a another, it was challenging course but I needed to push myself along in preparation for the upcoming world championships. I completed the bike course in 37:16 which I was really happy with, only one more run to finish off the race. I was feeling really strong and completed the final 2.5k in 12 mins 36sec. My combined time gave me third place in my age group which was a great surprise.
This was a very positive race leading into world championships next month, I can't wait to try another Dualthon and better my time. This race is was also using for the first time the TLR racing wheels, stay tuned for a review on these wheels
